Setting up your forwarding address...
Setting up your forwarding address is easy on most clients. You will automatically receive mail from your forwarding address, so the only thing you need to do is set up a new "identity" from which you can send mail. Below we have instructions on how to set this up with several common mail clients:
- Desktop Clients
Note that some email service providers - for example, Gmail and Windows Live/Hotmail - require that you register any forwarding address you use with them. If you are using one of these providers with a conventional desktop client, you must follow the steps for setting up your forwarding address with both your email service provider and your desktop client.
- Thunderbird - excellent support
- Outlook 2007 - adequate support
- Mac: Mail.app - excellent support
- Webmail
If you're using a webmail service that does not allow sending mail from a forwarding address, you can still probably configure a desktop client such as Thunderbird or Outlook to use your webmail service with your new forwarding address. Refer to your email provider for instructions on configuring Thunderbird or Outlook with your existing email address. Each webmail system is different; we have provided instructions for some of the more common ones, but it is impossible to address all of them.
- Gmail - excellent support
- Yahoo - adequate support
- Windows Live/Hotmail - excellent support
- AOL - not supported (can receive but can't send)
- Verizon - supported through a desktop client
If you're in the market for webmail or desktop client, our best experience using forwarding addresses has been with email service provided by Gmail or Windows Live/Hotmail; and for client software, the Thunderbird email client, or Leopard's built-in Mail application on the Mac. These addresses and software are available free of charge.
