Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the New Underground Railroad™?
In the 1800s, when slavery was still legal in many parts of the world, the Underground Railroad was an informal network of abolitionists, secret routes and safe houses that helped slaves escape to freedom.
Slavery still exists. But now that slavery is illegal in every country, the worldwide network of people fighting to end this injustice doesn’t need to be secret any more. The New Underground Railroad™ (NUR) is the world’s largest directory of abolitionists, volunteers, facilities, service providers, and organizations working to end modern slavery. As more and more people join from around the world every day, NUR becomes even more valuable in the fight against human trafficking.
Feel free to use the NUR to search by city, state or country to find the resources you need. We built it for you!
How can I use the New Underground Railroad?
Volunteers – list yourself according to the activities you’re willing to do to end modern slavery.
Facilities and service providers – list your information so people who need you can find you.
Nonprofits and community organizations – Need help with an activity? Use NUR as a volunteer manager!
Celebrities and musicians – list your business manager’s information so people can contact you to help fight the cause.
Do I have to join to be able to search?
No, anyone can search the NUR. You don’t have to join first. But if you’re interested in helping to end modern slavery, we think you should! :)
If I sign up as a volunteer, will people see my name?
No. Your listing is anonymous. Only your username will be listed in search results. Choose your username carefully!
How do you protect my privacy as a volunteer?
All requests for volunteers are sent through a blind email that passes through the NUR server to you. The sender never sees your personal information, only your username. You’ll receive the email at the address you provide, and you get to decide if you want to respond. If not, just delete the email.
Will I be contacted for things I don’t volunteer for?
No. You can only receive volunteer requests for the things you say you’re willing to do. For example, if you only list “pass out flyers,” you will not receive a volunteer request to “put up posters.”
Can I add an idea to the list of volunteer activities?
We LOVE crowd-sourcing! Please send us your idea at info@endslaverynow.com and if it fits, we’ll get it listed.
What if I no longer want to volunteer?
We would be very sad to hear you’ve lost interest in the fight against human trafficking! But we understand if you’re no longer able to support the movement. If that should happen, it’s easy to opt out -- when you login, you have the option to unregister by clicking the “Please unregister me” link.
I’m a celebrity/musician and I want to support the movement, but I don’t want anyone contacting me directly.
You ROCK! Literally. :) And we respect your privacy. Please use the Contact Person field to list your Business Manager and provide their contact information in your listing.
How do I know the search results are real?
All listings are validated before publishing. For all service providers and organizations, we manually validate every request for a listing.
I signed up my church/community organization/law firm/shelter (etc.), but I don’t see them listed when I search. What happened?
Please be patient! :) It takes time for our team to manually validate each and every request for service provider and organization listings, to ensure the NUR is not being abused.
I don’t see my favorite organization listed in the New Underground Railroad. Why not?
The NUR is quite literally new – it went live on January 1, 2010. Many organizations are just now learning about us. If you know of one that isn’t listed yet, please contact them and let them know about this great resource, so everyone can find them!
There’s another great organization I think should be listed in the New Underground Railroad – what should I do?
We’re glad you found them! Please send them an email and ask them to join us. :)
I received a volunteer request that I think was inappropriate.
By all means, let us know! Please follow the “report abuse” instructions included with each email. We have a zero tolerance policy on abuse and we will take action immediately.
I want to support the New Underground Railroad. How can I make a donation?
End Slavery Now and the New Underground Railroad do not accept donations from individuals or corporations. We encourage you to give to one of the organizations listed on our homepage, or to support the work of your local community-based anti-trafficking organization.
Why don’t you accept donations?
End Slavery Now and the New Underground Railroad are self-funded. By remaining financially independent, ESN/NUR are able to remain fully neutral and non-partisan. One of ESN’s purposes is to support the work of other anti-slavery organizations, not to compete against them by diverting precious donation resources.
